How To Win Valentine’s Day When You’re Single

So…You’re Single on Valentine’s Day?!

Valentine’s Day is a holiday that’s become synonymous with love. It’s a day to celebrate your significant other, or to honor your friends by sending them tokens of your appreciation. But what if you’re single? Or maybe you’re single and wishing you weren’t? Whether you’re celebrating with friends or taking some time for yourself, there are plenty of ways to enjoy Valentine’s Day as a single person.

A Brief History of Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day has its roots in the Roman Empire, where it was believed to be a time of fertility and love. During the Middle Ages, it began to be associated with romance and affection, with poems and love songs written for special occasions. In the 19th century, Valentine’s Day took on a more commercial aspect, and today is widely recognized as a day for lovers. For more interesting details click here.

Celebrating Valentine’s Day When You’re Single

Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be just for couples. It’s a great opportunity to show love and appreciation to those around you, especially if you don’t have a special someone to share it with. Here are some ideas to help make the most of Valentine’s Day when you’re single:

  1. Send virtual valentines. Sending a virtual Valentine’s Day card to your family, friends, or colleagues is an easy and thoughtful way to spread the love.
  1. Host a virtual party. There are plenty of ways to host a fun virtual party for Valentine’s Day, from hosting a game night to having a movie marathon.
  1. Treat yourself. Although it’s nice to show others love, don’t forget to treat yourself. Whether it’s getting a massage, indulging in a sweet treat, or buying yourself a special gift, take time to make sure you’re feeling the love too.
  1. Get creative with your gift-giving! If there’s no one in particular that needs a present from you, why not treat yourself? Buy something nice for yourself and have fun celebrating your accomplishments over the last year (or decade).
  1. Volunteer your time. Valentine’s Day is a great time to give back to your community. Look for volunteer opportunities in your area or make a donation to a worthy cause.
  1. Make a plan for how you’ll spend the day. If you can’t get with friends or family, reach out to someone from your past—someone who might be able to help make the day special for both of you.
  1. Remember that it’s not all about romance—it can also be about friendship! Give your best friend an extra big hug and/or a heartfelt compliment today and show them how much they mean to you.
  1. Take yourself out for dinner at a fancy restaurant! You deserve it!
  1. Go see a movie by yourself! Get popcorn and candy—and enjoy some quality time with yourself.
  1. Have a sleepover at home! Watch movies until the sun comes up, read books until your eyes fall shut, make a fort in the living room—whatever makes YOUR heart happiest!
  1. Make your own version of Valentine’s Day: As a single person, you don’t want to feel left out or alone on this special day. If your friends are having a couples’ dinner party or going out on dates, why not host your own party? Invite all your friends over and make it a potluck so everyone can bring something delicious! You can even create a theme for the party and ask everyone to dress up in their favorite costume (or no costume at all).
  1. Participate in Satanic Rituals! I’m mostly joking but hey I’m not going to judge you! There’s a really interesting documentary called “Hail Satan?” (and no, it’s not as evil as you might think). Or create your own Valentine’s day ritual, this can be your day where you make all the rules.
  1. Write yourself a poem, try the haiku form. You never know, you might just impress yourself!

I’ve Rarely If Ever, Had a Romantic Valentine’s Day

I chalk it up to timing mostly but I can’t remember having a romantic Valentine’s day. Yet I still LOVE Valentine’s Day! I used to be a hopeless romantic. Now I’m more of a cynical/sometimes hopeful probable spinster for life 😆. So, you’d think there’s no reason for my love for this day except for the fact that it’s a day about love! There are so many different forms of love, why narrow it down to the fleeting form that is romantic love?

You Already Knew You Were Single 🤷🏼‍♀️

Speaking from experience… I’ve had my own ridiculous amount of heartbreaks that felt like dying, but I always knew I was single when the day of February 14th rolled around. It wasn’t a surprise or anything. And maybe it’s weird, but I absolutely love spending time with myself.

But don’t beat yourself up if you’re feeling down this Valentine’s Day! It’s a sign you are human and crave healthy connection that you so deserve. Maybe if you’re always sad when single on this day, it’s time to show yourself some love!
