Infectious Colitis: My Story, Symptoms to Watch For, and How to Heal

Well I started off the month unexpectedly in the hospital. I’m okay but I had a rough time to say the least…

Severe Pain

I had severe abdominal pain and bloating (the worst pain I have ever experienced). I assumed it would go away in the night but it sure as hell did not. Didn’t sleep a wink the first night. I couldn’t get in a comfortable position and the pain was so bad it caused me to throw up.

I debated going to the ER but I really thought the pain would pass and that wouldn’t be unnecessary. As soon as the closest Urgent Care facility opened I went there. Right away they told me to go to the ER, I was in no shape to drive so they had an ambulance pick me up. I heard the sirens when they were close and thought, ‘geez that’s a little dramatic!’

Morphine and Droperidol

They hooked me up to an IV and all sorts of other things. They injected me with morphine which made my brain feel a little fuzzy and happy but the pain remained. The next time a nurse came in I told them I was still in a lot of pain so they added on a “powerful tranquilizer” called, Droperidol. This caused me to fall asleep but not for quite a while and I was still in pain.

They did some tests on me including a cat scan. They found that I have an infectious form of Colitis. The only Colitis I have heard of is the autoimmune disease long-term type. I was worried I had that but he assured me it would go away on it’s own without needing surgery or anything – what a relief. I eventually went home with a prescription of Dicyclomine and Zofran. Dicyclomine is what is helping the most. It calms down the painful stomach/intestine spasms and cramping. I can take it once every 8 hours and I feel it when it wears off. I couldn’t keep any food or water down for 2 days but once I was able to, I knew I was on the mend.

Migraine-Fun

One fun thing about having chronic migraines is that anything that throws me off physically ends up resulting in a migraine. I was so dehydrated, unable to eat, sleep or take my normal supplements. I have had bad migraine symptoms for many days now. Luckily my severe abdomen pain is gone but it’s taking a while to get back to normal.

Food

I pretty much always eat a high fiber diet. Everything I eat has fiber in it. When you’re having Colitis you should choose low fiber bland foods. I’ve been getting back into eating at a slow pace. Having soft things, soup, finally had a smoothie yesterday but drank it slowly. The night that all this started I had eaten a bowl of banana “nice” cream (ice cream that’s made entirely out of bananas), plus a big bowl of popcorn. I kind of thought I had caused my severe pain by perhaps eating too much fiber too quickly but I guess that’s not the case. I am still afraid of popcorn for the time being though. 🙅🏼‍♀️

Colitis Facts

Infectious Colitis is a type of colitis caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites that inflame the colon. Common causes include E. coli, Salmonella, Clostridioides difficile (C. diff), and certain viral infections. Symptoms often include diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, and sometimes blood in the stool.

Diet

If you’re wondering what to eat with infectious colitis, the best diet is usually bland and easy to digest. Foods like bananas, white rice, applesauce, toast, oatmeal, and plain boiled potatoes can be soothing for the digestive system. It’s best to avoid dairy, caffeine, alcohol, greasy foods, spicy meals, and raw high-fiber vegetables until symptoms improve. Staying hydrated with water and electrolyte-rich fluids is also key for recovery.

Treatment

Treatment for infectious colitis depends on the cause—some cases improve with rest, fluids, and diet changes alone, while others may require antibiotics or antiparasitic medication. Because infectious colitis can look similar to other digestive issues, it’s important to get medical advice for the right diagnosis and treatment plan.
