Chronic Pain, My Life

Pain – The Great Motivator

These journal-style posts are for me as much as they are for the reader, maybe more for me… Writing has always helped me sort out and refine my thoughts. Writing about my health struggles helps me to keep track of when certain things happen and in what order.

Hard Surface Sleeping

So, I have been sleeping on a hard surface (my wooden platform bed plus a firm exercise mat) for a while now. This helped my lower back pain quite a bit. It helped so much and I was so desperate to feel better that I sold my (previously) beloved mattress.

I’m not sure if it is because the weather has turned colder or what but I’m pretty sure I have been sleeping on my side. I’ve mostly trained myself (due to a slipped disc and various pain issues over the years) to sleep on my back. I naturally want to sleep on my side though. Suddenly both hips started killing me! I’m thinking it’s from side-sleeping on a hard surface.

Ikea Trip

The pain was exceptionally bad last Saturday. It was hard to tell if it was my hip joints or more surface pain like bruising. It definitely felt like surface pain and probably some internal joint pain as well. It hurt so bad that my FIRST IKEA TRIP EVER was cut extremely short. Walking was too painful and ya’ll, Ikea is HUGE. (Have you ever heard of Ikea SCP stories/videos? I highly recommend if you’re into spooky weird shit) Not being able to walk around in Ikea for a long time was probably for the better. Partly why I have never gone to one is because I know I’ll want to buy everything especially all things related to organization 🤤.

Back To A Mattress?!

The reason for the Ikea trip was ….drum roll! A mattress!!!

For a month or two I’ve been looking for the perfect mattress. I don’t want a thick normal mattress. I want one that is as firm as humanly possible while adding a little cushioning for my poor ole hips when I sleep on my side.

I searched the internet high and low, far away and nearby stores. All of the Japanese style mattresses had mixed reviews and a high return rate. I finally found my new wonderfully perfect so far, Ikea mattress! It is much thinner than a normal mattress so there shouldn’t be any real “spine sagging”. But the perfect thickness and firmness to not bruise my damn hips when I side-sleep. It’s only about 4 inches thick so Luna doesn’t have too high of a jump into my already high up bed.

I am in no way affiliated with Ikea or this mattress I am just really pumped about finding the exact mattress I was hoping to find!

It is 6 nights in and my lower back and hips have been feeling better 🙌🏼🙏🏻
