The Importance of Fun as an Adult

I have always thought that it isn’t right that adults usually don’t “play” or focus much on fun.

This is not easy for me. I am type A personality always thinking about what I “should” be doing rather than going out and doing something for the sheer enjoyment of it.

I learned that this exacerbated my severe depression that I’ve had most of my life. I’ve done a lot of learning about and working on my depression, so I tend to take actions towards helping relieve it. I think one of the most beneficial ones for my mental and physical health is FUN. Vitamin F is what I like to call it.

I have gone through so many strict lifestyle choices that seem to suck any enjoyment out of life, and I eventually learned that being so strict and never letting loose is in fact…unhealthy. In January of this year (2019) I stopped taking an anti-anxiety medication that I was on for 10 years. It seemed to be fine until I am now looking back and realized I don’t hang out with friends hardly at all anymore and I simply rarely do anything fun. I don’t think I need to get back on the medication but I need to consciously remind myself to HAVE FUN.

I think us adults should not stop doing things just because we’re “too old”. If we want to play laser tag with friends, paint, play hide and go seek, climb a tree, or color then please do it! Not just for your sake but for everyone’s around you as well.
